The meaning is simple; I am afraid to admit. Baseball and art are suspiciously similar. Both are ridiculous, children’s activities played by adults. Slow, sometimes boring, commercialized and yet both create deeply felt experiences for participants and fans. This series grew out of my digging through dozens of old baseball books. Look at the colorful uniforms and the human bodies underneath; marvel at the flexed arms and stretched legs reaching for home.

I have always loved Frank Stella, his paintings, sculptures, and painting-sculptures, as well as his persona. He is carefree and care-less. He wields lines and shapes and colors to eye-popping effect. Everyone loves his early, minimal paintings, and I do too. But I also love the enormous, maximalist works that seem to have exploded out of Stella’s imagination.
